The years 1962-67 I was a young doctor at St. Helens Hospital, Hastings, doing geriatrics under Dr. Bobby Irvine. Since then I frequently think on that historic city, its cold and windy winters and especially the Hastings Chess Congress that I attended to see Tal, Botvinnik and other top players. Beatiful memories, I will always remember those wonderful years in Hastings.

Having seen the publicity, visited the new Jerwood Gallery. Much nicer than the Turner at Margate and much more in keeping with its surroundings.
We shopped, had lunch and will come again, with friends.
Do'nt knock the gallery, it is an asset for Hastings.

So homesick from Hastings, just like the rest of you all. I was brought up in Hastings from 1982, later moving to Perth, Scotland in 2001, a few days after WTC 911 attack.
Anybody remember the big green incredible hulk statue that moved its head from left to right on the seafront?
Anybody remember the old sweet shop "one penny two penny" on Battle Rd, two doors from sweeny todds. My local sweet shop as a kid, living on Perth Road.
Lovely smell of boiled sweets from the sweet factory behind battle rd, opposite the rising sun pub.
Just like many of you, i too am homesick. I will be back to live one day though. Miss you all.

It's always a pleasure to re-visit Hastings. My grandparents lived there, first in around 1900 at 32 Vicarage Road, then 127 Stonefield Terrace (20's?) and finally at 5 Blacklands Drive in the 30's before moving to live with their daughters' families in London. My grandfather, Arthur J. Barnes, was Superintendent of Hastings Police.
I visited with my mother many times, in my earliest memories by Timpson's coach from London to be met by my grandfather at the coach terminus (adjoining the Cricket Ground?). I have photos of myself
at about age 3 in 1937 on the beach opposite Bottle Alley. Chidhood memories include many visits to shows at White Rock Pavilion, including "The Folderols".
Grandfather was a Steward at the Pilot Field ground of Hastings and St Leonards F.C. I also remember attending speedway at the ground. In the mid-40's I swam on occasion at the White Rock baths. A fond memory of those years is Dimarco's Ice Cream parlour.
From 1952 to 1954 I was posted during my National Service at RAF Wartling just outside Little Common village, and during this time I was able to swim at White Rock again when invited with some of my swimming colleagues at the camp to be guests of the Hastings and St Leonards Swimming Club; I travelled into Hastings on occasion to absorb some all-in wrestling at the Pier Pavilion.
Apart from one or two brief visits in the late 50's and early 60's, I didn't visit the area again until 2003 - I emigrated to Australia in 1966. Hastings was my first stop on a car tour of fondly remembered places from my early years. I was able to visit and photograph the fondly-remembered locations of my
earlier years. I am glad to have the opportunity of sharing just a few of my memories of Hastings.

Congratulations to 1066internet web design - your site is absolutely brilliant. Well laid out, so simple to use, very user friendly and chock full of interesting stuff.
I am researching my half brother's family who originally came from Hastings and St Leonards, their name is Wrenn. Lots of useful content on your web site.
Been on so many different web sites and lots of them leave me wanting to commit suicide. 1066online should be used as a generic template on how to create a top notch, simple to use, well laid out web site.
100% well done!

My family on my mothers side, name of Cook, all hail from the Hastings area. They lived at Ebenezer Road and East Hill Passage, and as a child my sisters and I spent many a happy holiday staying with Gran and Grandad Cook.
Grandad, Jimmy, used to keep crabs and lobsters on the toilet floor in basins to keep them fresh - so you can imagine that one went to the loo quickly whilst keeping a sharp look-out!
Came down for a visit last month but was disappointed to see so much revamping of the old town going on - the place no longer smelt the same - do the boats still go out or are they just for show? Please don't let Hastings Old Town become like so many other characterless towns throughout Sussex.

I have just enjoyed some wonderful moments in Hastings to-night. I am now 83 yrs old and was born at 67 winchelsea rd in Ore in 1927 which was my grans house.
As a young lad we always spent our holidays in Hastings. All my mums family lived around Ore. Looking at the pictures of Hastings brough back wonderful memories. Ecclesbourn Glen to where I was piggy backed down to the rocky beach by one of my uncles where a fire was made with driftwood to make tea for a family picnic. The east and west lifts, the caves, fishermens net sheds, and church. I remember the motor boat rides on the boating pool, my mums cousin selling icecreams along the beach, and especially Biddy in tub ( I did have a ride in his tub). The lifboat being wheeled down the beach on the big wheel bogy when the maroons went off. I could go on.
After ww2 my wife and I spent fifteen years holidays at my mum and dads house at 44 old London Rd in Ore with our two daughters who loved every moment. It was nice to let them have the same experience I did as a lad.
Thank you Hastings.

I went to West St Leonards Primary School and the Grove Schoo l (I was nicknamed Jonah!) until 1967. Sadly lost contact with many school friends when I moved to the Oxford area.

We moved to St. Leonards 6 months ago, and I love it, but I don't have any friends here yet, as I haven't been able to get out and about much up until now. I'm hoping to find things to do here where I can meet and get to know other people. Great website! Well done, and thankyou!

I have lived in hastings all my life, and to be honest, i dont think its the same as it used to be. I would love to see some more of the great things Hastings has to offer. I love flickng throuigh the pictures of time during the olden days, and seeing what they have cnaged into now. Love the website, keep up the good work!

I lived in Hastings and St leonards from 1979 - 1982. I was 18 years old in 1979....long time ago. It was great days, the best time of my life. We went to Scalliwags along the seafront at the regent hotel (I worked there) and the wine bar at George Street and the pumphouse. And Saturdays (night club). The day time we spent in cafes, Fortes and Kennedys.
I got to know loads of people like philip edmunds, alan barbary, dave lelliott, luis araujo, andy pembleton, tracy and debbie from colchester, adam and jane, and a girl called Michelle Stevens who moved out to Australia with her family. She had a sister called Petra. And there was Pete veness (postman pete) who also moved to australia (Tasmania). I have tried to find out what happened to them....does anyone know?
I had a bedsit at 4 magdalen road - what a crazy house.
I have been back a lot of times to visit, but it is 10 years since my last visit. Have to come and visit soon!! Hastings is a wonderful place.
Lots of love, Jeanette

Hi there,
I have fond memories of The Continental College in Hastings during the year 1964 -1966. Especially those who studied and lived in Mr. Duke House. The occupants were from France, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Greek, Turkey, Spain and Arabs. We had so much fun and enjoyed every minute. Friendship is a wonderful gift from God, one must cherish.
Although I used to travel to England almost every second month due to my job requirement, unfortunately never had the time to visit Hastings.

My fist time in Hastings was in 1980, me and two friends moved from the north of Italy on an old Mini Clubman towards an unforgettable holyday! I was back the next year and again and again...last time 25 years ago, but leaving Hastings that time I said "See you soon..".
In these years I've been in a lot of nice and interesting places, but Hastings was still in my mind and in my heart.
Saturday will be my 50th birthday and I was thinking about my personal present....and I realized which was my wish. I'm going to have a special weekend in Hastings, and even if a lot of things changed I'm sure I will find the same incredible atmosphere.
Thank you for the website, it has been really useful to plan my journey.

I visited Hastings regularly from 1978 to 1980. The beach, Ye Olde Pump House, The Wine Bar, The Crypt, the pier. is it possible to feel homesick for a place you've never lived? Yes it is!
Reading the sentiments of other people on these pages who clearly feel the same way just reinforces a growing sense I've had for a few years now. This place has an unfathomable hold on my heart. I live 600 miles away but Hastings is calling me!
I was away for 20 years. Now I've been back a few times of times in recent years and I'm glad to report that it's still a brilliant place, oozing charm from every brick. I'm lucky enough to be able to come back permanently soon: I shall definitely be coming home!

I moved to St Leonards from Melbourne, Australia with my family in 1959. Stayed 3 years before coming back to Australia.
My father and mother opened a cafe at 96 Bohemia Rd called The Boomerang Cafe. Dad and Mum organised a large boomerang that was hung over the entrance plus lots of other Aussie stuff inside the cafe. I think many people came to Australia because of Dad and Mum.
I attended Hastings Secondary School for Boys, Priory Road. 3 Years of wonderful memories growing up in your seaside town. I have been back a couple of times but have been disapointed with the appearance of my old school and the Bohemia Rd area. Will always remember Hastings/StLeonards.

I have very fond memories of hastings particulary St.Leonards. I was born in Gillingham near rochester, but we moved down to hastings in the early part of the war when I was a baby.
I remember the trolly buses, the deck chairs, and the man in the tub who used to perform his balanceing act in the sea for the summer crowds and also the large speed boat which ran from the pier taking people for rides. I believe it was powered by a spitfire engine. And then there was the paddle steamer, I loved going on that and who could forget old George the tramp who lived on the St Leonards golf course in a wood. In summer he played his fiddle to the crowds and at Christmas he was Father Christmas at Plummers.
I left Hastings in 1954 for Australia when I was fourteen years old, but I now live in New Zealand, I have never been back to hastings but I would love to visit it again. Happy days.

In the early 1980s, I moved from Nottingham to St.Leonards, where I attended the Hastings College. At that time I lived with foster parents, Harold and Marie LeBrock at the Clock House, Maize Hill.
Now I promise my son that before I die, I will take him there to see my 'hometown'
St. Leonards, I love you forever.

Used to visit Hastings on many occasions, when I first got married; now I find whilst researching my family history.
My Grandfather was born in Hastings, named Taylor, was orphaned, some of his siblings were in an orphanage in Godwin Road before being sent to Canada, can't find where my Grandada orphanage was, one of his brothers was in the Gorden Boys home.

I grew up in Hastings and have always loved it. I started off as a cub reporter on the Hastings Observer in 1960 for the princely wage of £6 a week covering courts and councils and fetes worse than death!
Went to The Grove School. Later Sussex University in 1968. Nearing retirement now but Hastings will always hold a special place in my heart.

Your website is very good.
I went to Hastings 18 years ago (in 1990) as part of a language travel. I really enjoyed this travel because that was my first travel to England. The photos of this wabsite remind me of memories.
To my mind, just a little thing to improve... for the maps of Hastings, could you give the possibility to watch a satellite map?
Very good job and congratulations for your website.

Thank you for your 1066 site, I have now seen the Coastguard Cottages that my 3 x gt grandfather lived in as a Coastguard.
He lived in Hastings 1837 and served almost 30 years as a Coastguard/Yeoman of Signals on HMS DAUNTLESS and HMS PRINCESS CHARLOTTE. The pictures of Ecclesbourne Glen was a nice find.
Thank you all for your efforts with the 1066 site.
