Castledown Avenue,
Hastings, East Sussex
This semi-detached town house is just a short stroll from The West Hill, which offers some of Hastings’ most remarkable views, stretching round to Beachy Head in the west and out across the English Channel. Guests will be able to see Hastings Castle from the property and also view glimpses of the sea from the bedroom window. It was on this hilltop that Hastings’ resident, John Logie Baird, the inventor of television, made his first radar experiments. The West Hill Cliff funicular railway drops you straight into the old town, which has a mix of half-timbered houses, narrow streets and passageways called ’twittens’ with cafés and vintage shops. Deep in the West Hill, explore Hastings’ smuggling heritage at St Clement’s Caves. Visit the Jerwood Gallery, housing 20th and 21st century British art. You could also take a short stroll down to the sea for a swim or a ride on the East Hill funicular railway to explore 660 acres of coastal country park. Rye, Camber Sands and Battle, not to mention Pevensey and Bodiam Castles, are all within a short driving distance or easy train ride from the nearby station (1/2 mile). Beach ¼ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
